A friend of mine and I were speaking the other day, and we were discussing his new home he had built. He said he had the perfect spot for a large tree (somehow our conversations always come around to christmas or baseball). We then both immediately mentioned how we had to find a new tree farm to visit. It had been a tradition for us to go to Wrights' Mill Tree Farm in Canterbury, CT, and select the biggest tree on the lot. This was back when a group of friends lived together in a rented house and we'd hoist the tree up on the front lawn. It was quite a good time (the owner of the tree farm liked to offer brandy to his customers on very cold days.).
Wrights' Mill closed a few years ago, the culmination of growing too much beyond their tree-selling roots and opening up a too-large wedding facility. The owner eventually sold out and all that is left is the wedding facility, unfortunately. The farm was a historical landmark, with acres of trees and old mills interspersed. The wedding facility idea probably stemmed from the fact that many couples wanted to use the landscape as a place to get married, often standing right on the old mills.
The tree farm was a great operation, with small tractors used to transport trees, and eager kids ready to help you hoist your tree on your car for $ 5. Our ride home with the tree was always an adventure. Having a 20-foot tree dangling over the roof of your car is always a risky ride.
Anyway, I've begun researching other tree farms in Connecticut. I'll expand my search to other New England areas soon, and I'm hopeful more readers will comment on other tree farms they recommend:
Connecticut Christmas Tree Farms:
Rose's Berry Farm - South Glastonbury, CT
Roses's seems to offer more than simply tree cutting. They serve breakfast and have a Christmas Gift Shop
Olsen's Christmas Trees - Voluntown, CT
Christmas wreaths and boughs, Christmas decorations, saws provided, trees bagged, trees tied, gift shop, snacks and refreshment stand, restrooms
The Farm - North Stonington, CT
Pretty much a straight-up tree farm. Doesn't seem like there's much for extras, but the landscape looks beautiful. "We will cut, haul, shake and bale your tree for you all you do is select the tree."
Maple Row Tree Farm - Easton, CT
* This website is definitely the best I've come across yet. Looks promising! Definitely worth investigating!
Silverman's Farm - Easton, CT
They offer a gift shop, fresh cut trees, hot mulled cider and donuts.
Snow's Farm - Easton, CT
Sounds like a trip to Easton may be in order! This is the third decent-sounding place I've found in the town.
Angevine Farm - Warren, CT
* This farm looks elegant. In Litchfield county, they offer a house on November 10 with a christmas shop, crafts for kids, and hayrides.
