It was early October this year and we were starting to unpack our halloween village pieces. Our favorite pieces have always been the animated amusement park pieces from the Original Snow Village halloween series. One by one, we looked at each piece and realized why we didn't use them last year. All of the animated functions had stopped working. The Scaredy Cat Ferris Wheel had stopped spinning. The swinging ghoulies were pretty, well, dead. The pumpkin teacups were not revolving. The witch's turntable did not turn. Must be a common cause for similar malfunction, correct? We're very dissapointed. We spent about $80 each, and if we brought these pieces to an electric utility repair shop, we'd most likely be paying for them all over again. This year we're keeping up the tradition by coming up with five more halloween buildings for Department 56. Bats in my Attic : it's an attic residence over a garage, and you are able to see bats hanging in there. You can also see an almost-hidden coffin in the corner. Spooky Bowl : This piece would recreate the look and feel of a football field on a graveyard setting, complete with skeletal quarterback. Jack's Pumpkin Painting Palace : This is an expansion of the Jack's Carving Studio, and features multiple creatively painted pumpkins surrounding a studio. Landing in The Scarefield : It's a landing strip with a half of an airplane and skeletal pilots. A crow sits on one of the wings, and grass grows along the sides. Always eager to peruse the list of newest halloween pieces, this year's releases for The Original Snow Village Halloween collection were not met with the greatest fanfare from my wife or I. Well, it finally had to happen, I had to take down our 22-piece Snow Village display. With a baby on the way, we need to clear all of the empty Department 56 boxes out of our spare room and get them back down to storage. Thankfully, we have a spare bedroom, because that will become the baby's bedroom. I began the task of putting away our displays last friday night, but I wasn't able to finish on the weekend. I left the entire set of "A Christmas Story" pieces, albeit on another table, all jammed together like an urban cityscape. Those will come down this weekend, and then everything will be put away for another year. I will drag the Halloween pieces out first, so my wife and I have easy access to them next September. I'll then carefully place the Christmas storage bins behind them, making sure nothing is blocking the easy retrieval of my villages. Department 56 introduced a second village series in 1986, the New England Village. This village also included "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Not unlike Dickens' Village "All Hallows Eve" series, this subset fits in well with the halloween theme. It's the last day of July, and though my wife would not want me to wish away the summer, I'll admit the fall is my favorite time of the year. The foliage, crisp evenings, the start of football season, inching closer to the holidays...I can't wait. Even though she loves summer, she's starting to feel the excitement of the fall as well - all of the fun event we attend: The Big E in West Springfield, Massachusetts, the Yankee Candle factory trip, the Turkey Bowl (every year about 40 friends gather to share food and play touch football - only one injury in six years!).
