Featured D56 online store: The Satin Button

The Satin Button is an online store that was introduced to me by the owner, Kristin Singhasemanon. The store carries Department 56, Department 56 Krinkles, Department 56 classic brands and other holiday gifts.

Her Department 56 sales are located on her specials page.

She sent me a detailed description of her store, but I found a personal note on the website itself that evoked a nice summary of the store's intent (copied in full):

"As a little girl, the holidays were always filled with charm and enchantment. To my family, the holidays were something to be cherished. Most little girls experience their own form of magic at Christmastime. What was different in our house was that every holiday was magical. On Valentine's Day, our dinner table became the site of a little game of hide-and-seek to find special messages and treats from Mom. Throughout the year, we colored Easter eggs, carved pumpkins and made our own Christmas ornaments.

My mother shared her passion for celebration by running a small holiday decor and collectible shop in a quaint little town of northern California. Townspeople came. Then, their family and friends came. It was a storied past and simply an unforgettable experience in my life since I, too, spent many years in that little shop.

During those times, we saw that people shared the same joy of the holidays and seasons as we did in our household. We also learned a lot from our customers. Everybody's stories seemed to include the laughter of children. They wanted to make each holiday magical for the little ones in their lives. The decorations we sold created the atmosphere, but they needed a little something more for the children to enjoy. Something fun. Something different. But they didn't know where to go. The baby superstores can be overwhelming, and are sometimes out of the way. Toy stores are all the same. Since these are the same folks who love to bring the magic of the holidays to their homes, why not offer them one place where they can shop for themselves and the little ones in their lives?

It was on this concept that I founded The Satin Button. I am able to carry on my mother's dreams with seasonal decor & collectibles, and couple that with fun & unique gifts for the little ones in your life. As a mother of two children myself, I am dedicated to carrying on my mother's tradition of making each holiday special throughout the year. From the decorations that make your house festive, to the collectibles that little ones will someday inherit, to a special "something" that they can enjoy today, The Satin Button will bring memorable moments to your lives all through the year."

Hooked on Department 56 has a great article on tips for creating your halloween village . The article features tips and informative links on all of the wonderful and scary options for outfitting your decorative halloween villages, including haunted sounds, spooky lights, and flying witches. The story also features information about The 2008 Haunted Rails Engine & Coal Car, and Rickety Railroad Station, two of Department 56's Halloween village pieces created to mark the ten year anniversary of D56 Halloween. While the train itself is ceramic and non-working, you still get the feel of the haunted railroad. The also is not limited to just D56, as it also mentions Disney Villains from Hawthorne Village. An excerpt from the story: "In 1998, Department 56 introduced the first Halloween village collection. Department 56 Halloween Village features spooky castles, flying witches, skeletons, and gravediggers. Many of the buildings are lighted with fiber optic light effects, that fli...

Lego in the news this week

Olin administrator builds Lego Needham Town Hall It turns out that two Town Halls were built in Needham this year. One was the brick-and-mortar building sitting in Needham Center, which underwent renovations and additions and will be officially unveiled at a Needham300 event on Nov. 5.  The other Town Hall is made of Legos.  Nick Tatar, Assistant Dean of Student Life at Olin College, built this second Town Hall at Olin over the course of three months, starting in January. Working with Olin professor Brad Minch and seven children and Olin students, Tatar built the Town Hall out of fifteen thousand Lego pieces, sometimes working 10 to 15 hours a week on the project. On Nov. 5, Tatar will break the Town Hall into chunks and transport it to the other Town Hall. At noon, he will reassemble it, then step back and let people admire his handiwork. Tatar said that he decided to build this Lego Town Hall for kids to enjoy during the Nov. 5 Needham 300 gala. “I wanted to see if we c...
