Universal Monsters - the next great d56 halloween series?

dracula's domainI remember as a child seeing my brother's collection of models he had built from the classic "monsters of the movies" - Dracula, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Wolfman, and I also remember our cousin breaking them all. What a terrible disaster, I thought. It was a marvelous collection.

These reflections must be what are making me want to collect Department 56's "Universal Studios Monsters" series, which includes "Dracula's Domain" (pictured left), "Dracula's Castle", "Frankenstein's Laboratory", and "Creature's Lair".

There was also the retired "classic monsters" series, which included "Dracula's Castle", "Curse of the Wolfman", and "Frankenstein's Monster".

universal studios stretch monstersAt Super Stop and Shop I picked up four strecthy versions of Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. They were only $1.99 each and they are kind of cool. They now climbing the sides of my physical mail inbox at the office.

    Do you happen to know the manufacturer on those little Universal Monsters. Figures? I'm trying to find that Creature of the Black Lagoon figure for a friend. She recently lost hers and, well, she had gotten attached...

Lego in the news this week

Olin administrator builds Lego Needham Town Hall It turns out that two Town Halls were built in Needham this year. One was the brick-and-mortar building sitting in Needham Center, which underwent renovations and additions and will be officially unveiled at a Needham300 event on Nov. 5.  The other Town Hall is made of Legos.  Nick Tatar, Assistant Dean of Student Life at Olin College, built this second Town Hall at Olin over the course of three months, starting in January. Working with Olin professor Brad Minch and seven children and Olin students, Tatar built the Town Hall out of fifteen thousand Lego pieces, sometimes working 10 to 15 hours a week on the project. On Nov. 5, Tatar will break the Town Hall into chunks and transport it to the other Town Hall. At noon, he will reassemble it, then step back and let people admire his handiwork. Find New Haunts at the Classics & Country Home Decor & Gifts

I recently found this website while perusing the Yahoo Group...they feature many of the new for 2008 pieces as "coming soon". You can see some of them on the Snow Village Halloween page. Many of the classics, such as the Black Cat Diner, are sold out. We ended up getting that one on Ebay last year. I found it for my wife as one of her wedding gifts.
