Featured product: Magic Water

I received an email from a reader asking me to post about his product, Magic Water™. I asked him to send me some testimonials from customers who've used his product and he obliged.

Magic Water™ can be used for creating ice scenery for village displays. The owner, Dave Williams, said sales spike over the holiday season, mainly from many Department 56 villagers.

On the website, the product's origin states that "Magic Water™ came about as the result of a long search for the ideal water modeling resin. One that would not yellow, shrink, crack or bubble when you put debris into it. Also one that was user friendly, not needing to be heated or layered and had ample working time before setting up. Magic Water™ sets up in as little as 12 hours and not more than 24 depending on the atmospheric conditions. Each carton of Magic Water™ contains enough resin, 18 ounces, to make any average sized project, depending on your scale. It comes complete with a multi page color booklet and instruction guide loaded with water modeling tips and techniques on making, ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, rapids. waterfalls, swamps, swimming pools, mudpuddles and more!"

The testimonials:

"I just have to tell you that this is the most amazing stuff!!! I have ordered twice from you, and will be ordering again soon. The more I use this stuff, the more impressed and amazed I am!!! Its WONDERFUL!!! Thank you for bringing this marvelous product to us!!!" - Laren Kas April 9, 2007

"Hello, First I want to tell you what a wonderful product you have. My sons are in 4H and joined the model railroad project several years ago. Each year they are given a 2" X 2" square to model anyway they choose. Every year we struggle with modeling water. This year was no exception. We started out with Realistic Water which never fully cured. We were reluctant to spend the money on your product, but after talking with you we decided to give it a try. We painted over the Realistic Water and poured the Magic Water on top. It was the best water we have ever modeled! Your product outperformed ANY other product we have tried, and we have tried many! I have recommended it to all the other members of our project. Thank you for saving our project! You helped my son earn a blue ribbon with special merits and win an award for one of the best junior modelers. Thank you for making such a great product!" -

"Hello Dave! A few weeks ago I e-mailed you with questions regarding a pond I was working on. If you remember, I wanted to show my pond with a "just freezing" effect. I am not quite done with my pond and had planned on doing more with it, however, I wanted my village up in time for Christmas. I plan on adding more after the holidays. I have to tell you that Magic Water was great to work with and I had sooo much fun doing this pond! I want to thank you for all your step by step instructions that helped me through this project. I am including some photos to show you how it turned out! Thanks again and have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! CAN'T WAIT TO ADD MORE DETAILS! - Sharon"

Tomorrow is Labor Day, Next Up is Halloween!

Hooked on Department 56 has a great article on tips for creating your halloween village . The article features tips and informative links on all of the wonderful and scary options for outfitting your decorative halloween villages, including haunted sounds, spooky lights, and flying witches. The story also features information about The 2008 Haunted Rails Engine & Coal Car, and Rickety Railroad Station, two of Department 56's Halloween village pieces created to mark the ten year anniversary of D56 Halloween. While the train itself is ceramic and non-working, you still get the feel of the haunted railroad. The also is not limited to just D56, as it also mentions Disney Villains from Hawthorne Village. An excerpt from the story: "In 1998, Department 56 introduced the first Halloween village collection. Department 56 Halloween Village features spooky castles, flying witches, skeletons, and gravediggers. Many of the buildings are lighted with fiber optic light effects, that fli...

Lego in the news this week

Olin administrator builds Lego Needham Town Hall It turns out that two Town Halls were built in Needham this year. One was the brick-and-mortar building sitting in Needham Center, which underwent renovations and additions and will be officially unveiled at a Needham300 event on Nov. 5.  The other Town Hall is made of Legos.  Nick Tatar, Assistant Dean of Student Life at Olin College, built this second Town Hall at Olin over the course of three months, starting in January. Working with Olin professor Brad Minch and seven children and Olin students, Tatar built the Town Hall out of fifteen thousand Lego pieces, sometimes working 10 to 15 hours a week on the project. On Nov. 5, Tatar will break the Town Hall into chunks and transport it to the other Town Hall. At noon, he will reassemble it, then step back and let people admire his handiwork. Tatar said that he decided to build this Lego Town Hall for kids to enjoy during the Nov. 5 Needham 300 gala. “I wanted to see if we c...
