Big sales at D56 flagship stores

* Bildbeschreibung: Blick auf den Schriftzug ΓΌ...Image via WikipediaOne of our readers states that "big sales have started today at all the Flagship stores as they will all be closing. I am assuming this also means the MOA store though I haven't heard confirmation on this one. I also heard that several Lenox stores in Florida will also be closing."

Also, from discussions on the Yahoo! Original Department 56 collectors group:

"I called the M.B., SC store. They are swamped with customers. Then I had to call Ms.LitTown (Melinda)for a different matter and she told me she was in line this weekend and ended up putting her stuff back because the line was so long. They are NOT shipping product at this point from what I have been told. It's a whom ever shows up and can wait in line to get their goodies will get what is left."

"I was among the folks that weren't happy when Dept 56 opened it's first 'Flagship' store in the Mall of America. I didn't like it when they opened more of their 'own' stores. I still feel that the are/were competing with regular dealers - the ones that made them a success in the first place. I have mellowed a bit on the Mall of America store however. The Dept 56 HQ showroom isn't open to the public on a regular (year around) basis, so it served as the company showpiece. That is probably a good thing - for them and for us. Having said this, I understand that any reduction in company size might not bode well for the future. I wish them nothing but the best and sincerely hope that this is a worthwhile cost saving measure for Dept 56."

"I have heard from more than a few people about the lack of a local store to make a purchase. We are lucky here in Duluth/Superior, we still have two pretty well stocked dealers within a reasonable distance. Unfortunately that is down from seven just eight or nine years ago (we are over two hours north of the Twin Cities so we don't consider those stores 'local' dealers). And yes. Linda likes sales too - we might just be calling Myrtle Beach ourselves."

"Savings couldn't be any better at the Department 56 Flagship Store in Myrtle Beach, SC. As you may have heard - they are closing all these stores including the one at the Mall of America. Now is the time to make your purchases of Village, Snowbabies, giftware before they close."

Tomorrow is Labor Day, Next Up is Halloween!

Hooked on Department 56 has a great article on tips for creating your halloween village . The article features tips and informative links on all of the wonderful and scary options for outfitting your decorative halloween villages, including haunted sounds, spooky lights, and flying witches. The story also features information about The 2008 Haunted Rails Engine & Coal Car, and Rickety Railroad Station, two of Department 56's Halloween village pieces created to mark the ten year anniversary of D56 Halloween. While the train itself is ceramic and non-working, you still get the feel of the haunted railroad. The also is not limited to just D56, as it also mentions Disney Villains from Hawthorne Village. An excerpt from the story: "In 1998, Department 56 introduced the first Halloween village collection. Department 56 Halloween Village features spooky castles, flying witches, skeletons, and gravediggers. Many of the buildings are lighted with fiber optic light effects, that fli...

Lego in the news this week

Olin administrator builds Lego Needham Town Hall It turns out that two Town Halls were built in Needham this year. One was the brick-and-mortar building sitting in Needham Center, which underwent renovations and additions and will be officially unveiled at a Needham300 event on Nov. 5.  The other Town Hall is made of Legos.  Nick Tatar, Assistant Dean of Student Life at Olin College, built this second Town Hall at Olin over the course of three months, starting in January. Working with Olin professor Brad Minch and seven children and Olin students, Tatar built the Town Hall out of fifteen thousand Lego pieces, sometimes working 10 to 15 hours a week on the project. On Nov. 5, Tatar will break the Town Hall into chunks and transport it to the other Town Hall. At noon, he will reassemble it, then step back and let people admire his handiwork. Tatar said that he decided to build this Lego Town Hall for kids to enjoy during the Nov. 5 Needham 300 gala. β€œI wanted to see if we c...
