Ye Olde Wethersfield Scarecrows Upon Main Street

My wife, baby and I today took a stroll in Old Wethersfield, CT, a lovely little town we both had lived in previously. Main Street featured an annual display of scarecrows - some were great, some just ok, but all were signs of a community which was involved and interested in holiday activities.

Some of the scarecrows were movie themed, and some were extensions of the retail stores which sponsored them, such as The Spicy Green Bean Deli and The Red Onion.

The town sidewalks were extremely busy today, as people strolled to tour the scarecrows and partake in an ice cream treat at the Main Street Creamery, which was too packed for us to stop in, though my wife wanted a cone very badly. They also only took cash, and we only had our bank cards on us.

Our favorite scarecrows were the Little Ukranians, Michael the Angel (from the movie "Michael" starring John Travolta), the Wicked Witch of the West, the Red Onions, the Fiddler on the Roof, and the fireman rescuing a kitty from the tree.

I took pictures and created the following slideshow so you could see all of the scarecrows (you may need to come back to the original blog to view):

A Couple's Wintery Village Scenes

Showing that just because Christmas is over, doesn't mean it's time to take down your snowy scenes...I found this article in the Villages Daily Sun : "Walking in a winter wonderland takes on new meaning when anyone enters the home of Don and Lorraine Crowley. The couple have snowy scenes from the North Pole and Elfland set up in the living room, while the garage is filled with a huge Christmas in the City display, complete with streets, bridges and a baseball park. But for Lorraine, president of the Tri-County Department 56 Collector’s Club, the displays are nothing out of the ordinary, considering many of the club members have similar displays in their own homes. “Everybody has different ways of displaying it,” Lorraine said of the Department 56 collectibles. “You find different things. When somebody comes up with a unique idea, you try and share it. It’s always nice to see somebody do something different.” ... click here to read the rest of the article
